What are some Mistakes in Romeo and Juliet that Took the Tragedy Forward?

The deaths in the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare are tragic and disappointing. Even though a lot should have been done to prevent their deaths, these 2 are not able to avoid their destiny. A lot of things lead to their death and some people blame Friar Lawrence for their deaths, but Tybalt is most to blame. Shakespeare uses Tybalt’s involvement in the tragedy to show youth and inexperience often lead to mistakes. Some people believe that Friar Lawrence is responsible for the death of Romeo and Juliet because he gave Juliet the potion, but this is not the case.

Tybalt is the character that should be blamed for their deaths. Tybalt, should be blamed the most for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because he killed Mercutio.

In the play, it states My very friend hath got his mortal hurt. In my behalf. My reputation stained. With Tybalt’s slander- Tybalt, that an hour. Hath been my cousin (III, i, 115-118). Tybalt has anger issues that cause him to think irrationally and never think about the consequences of his actions. While it is, true Mercutio pushed Tybalt to fight him, Tybalt decided he wanted to kill Mercutio, causing Romeo to kill Tybalt, which caused him to be banished. Tybalt ended up dying because all he focused on was being the best and killing all his enemies. This shows how being young causes you to make mistakes because you are immature and do things without thinking just like Tybalt did. In the play, Romeo and Juliet, Tybalt wanted to fight Romeo throughout the entire play. Every time Tybalt met Romeo in the play he wanted to fight him. In the play, it states Boy, this shall not excuse the injuries. That thou hast done me. Therefore, turn and draw. (III, i, 67-68) . Tybalt’s short temper caused him to lash out when he sees things he does not like. His first responsible when he sees someone who bothers him is to fight him. Tybalt’s hatred for Romeo is one of the reasons why he ended up dying towards the end of the play. In the play, it states This, by his voice, should be a Montague. Fetch me my rapier, boy. What dares the slave. Come hither, cover’d with an antic face. To fleer and scorn at our solemnity? Now, by the stock and honour of my kin. To strike him dead, I hold it not a sin. (I, V, 676-681). Even when Tybalt is supposed to be relaxed he is always looking for someone to fight. In the play, he says he is going to kill Romeo because he saw him at a party his uncle is throwing. Some may argue that Romeo should have never been at the party in the first place. However, this is not the case because Tybalt worried to much about Romeo to enjoy his own party. This shows how being young can lead to mistakes because Tybalt held a grudge with Romeo just because he attended his party.

Additionally, and perhaps most important, Tybalt has a very bad temper. In the play, Tybalt states Uncle, this is a Montague, our foe. A villain that is hither come in spite. To scorn at our solemnity this night. (I, V, 69-71). Tybalt says here that Romeo is a villain and only came to the party to mock him. Tybalt believes that everything Romeo does is to insult him. This is not a good thing for him to think, especially since he has a short-temper. In the play, it states It fits such a villain is a guest. Ill not endure him (I, V, 74-75). Throughout this scene, Tybalt continues to insult Romeo because he bothered by his presence. His anger continues to grow way too fast just he is bothered by Romeo. Tybalt’s temper is proof that youth and inexperience can often lead to mistakes.

In the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses Tybalt’s character to show that when you are young you make more mistakes. Throughout the play, Tybalt proves that he is to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s suicide. While it is true that Romeo and Juliet moved too fast in their relationship, this is not the case. Tybalt did many things throughout this story that lead to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. First, Tybalt killed one of Romeo’s friends, Mercutio, in a fight where he was supposed to kill Romeo. Second, Tybalt was always focused on Romeo and what he was doing. Lastly, Tybalt has a bad temper and gets mad very often. He is always seeing little things as bad things which is why he ended up fighting with Mercutio and killing him. In the play, Romeo and Juliet, there are many examples that teach you that youth and inexperience can often lead to mistakes. This teaches us that you do not know everything just because you feel mature, you will still make mistakes.
