In success central, I attended a small breakout session about gun violence. At first, I thought this breakout session was going to be over gun control and politics but it was more in depth. The session was about how a victim truly feels after being affected by gun violence. Some of the statistics that I learned at the session is, gun-related deaths are now the third leading cause of death for American children. One of the main reasons i enjoyed this session was because it opened my eyes on how we can become a generation of leaders and educate people about gun storage, background checks, and training when purchasing a gun.
In the United States of America gun violence has been a severe problem happening over the last couple of years. People have different uses for firearms, such as self-defense, hunting, sports, etc. On the other side of the law, those in possession of a firearm use them for crime, mass shootings, and violence. Many times, firearms used in these events are acquired illegally. Events over the years have caused people traumatic injuries, post traumatic stress disorder, lost loved ones and their cost them their lives.
Gun violence has been a uniquely problem in America. Gun violence has been increasing over the course of five to six years. According to the article, Priorities in Recovering From a Lost Generation of Firearm Research states that The year 2018 opened with 17 school shootings within the first 45 days of the year, including the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida.
Gun laws have not been as effective as they need to be, with further research, the article 6 Real Ways We Can Reduce Gun Violence in America states, A more effective policy would require every buyer, of any age, to obtain a license that includes a registration of all purchases and at least a modest training program. In other countries they do not have as many problems as us Americans do, statistics prove that since 2016, gun homicides have increased. There are plenty of examples on the news, radio, social media, and magazines that the country of the United States is not doing an effective job of protecting their citizens from gun violence. It’s a surreal thought that anyone can go to a gun show and purchase a gun without a background check. At the session we learned that millions of guns are sold each year by a private vendor and they do not require a background check. It shouldn’t be easy for anyone to get ahold of a firearm, although this world isn’t perfect i believe stricter gun laws will reduce this problem we have.
Based on the research i found, the terrible mass shootings that have been happening just in a span of a year, have proven we need to utilize background checks and educate people on how guns do not just affect someone physically. Private vendors and gun shows need to utilize background checks so that firearms do not land in the wrong hands. This current generation of students need to vote and hold their candidates accountable to an advanced gun legislation.
