How it works

“It’s funny that two people from two different worlds could have so much in common. The novels “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins and ‘The Giver” by Lois Lowry share a lot of similarities, as well as some differences, when it comes to their characters, setting, and conflict.

The two main characters in these novels share a lot in common. For example, Katniss Everdeen volunteered to save her sister from having to fight for her life. Katniss’ sacrifice shows that she is willing to do whatever it takes to protect her family, even if it means she could die.

Jonas is very similar to katniss because as the giver he has to make many sacrifices like he wanted to tell his family and friends about what he gets to do as the giver but he couldn’t. Although they have a lot in common, Katniss and Jonas have some differences as well. Katniss can get very loud and explosive when fighting and is quick to speak up when she is passionate about something. As for Jonas he was very quiet and likes to stay quiet instead of being loud he is also a planner he likes to plan out what he has to do instead of just doing it.

The settings for the two stories are quite similar when you look at the overall picture, however, the difference in the setting lies in the fact that one knew about the life created for them while the other did not. Jonas didn’t know about the bubble that he was stuck inside of. He lived in a world that was sheltered and he didn’t know anything else existed around him. He was assigned the new position as The Giver and once he learned about things he had never known before, he decided to fight his way out of this world that was created for him and his family and friends. Katniss lives in a world with a bunch of districts and they were forced to live very poorly, her and the people knew about it.

The conflict for both of them very similar because both have to fight for what they believe in. Katniss’s conflict was escaping the district and having to overcome it by plotting and planning. She was trying to overturn the district and to make it to where the rich won’t control the poor anymore. Joans’ conflict was escaping the world he was stuck inside and finding a way out. Both are trapped in a world that’s controlled by others and they have to find a way to change that.

As stated above, there seems to be quite a few similarities and differences when it comes to the characters, settings, and conflict of Katniss Everdeen and Jonas. Both are very loyal, honest and not afraid to do what they believe is right. They both were trapped inside of a world that was controlled by others, however, only one of them knew about it while one had no idea there was more outside of their world. Katniss had to fight her way out of this world whereas Jonas had to find a way to sneak out. Both were living in a world created for them but were not content with their lives and had to stand up for what they believed in, resulting in conflict. Overall, both wanted more and wouldn’t settle for the life created for them.”
