How it works

The adoption of a constructivist approach to the education system helps ensure the integration of content knowledge from a range of disciplines. This enables mastery of the factual basis within each of these areas, encouraging students to apply these skills in several ways to meet the shared objective of the lesson. This is achieved through involvement in collaborative activities, building meaning into the experience, resulting in in-depth processing of information. Further, the method allows learners to discover and inquire about information that enhances creativity, independent thinking, and the quick application of facts and procedures to current scenarios and problems, leading to success.

However, the constructivist approach has some drawbacks, such as the limitations of not learning vital information since the method revolves solely around achieving critical thinking. As such, students lack a wide range of background information based on central building blocks of learning offered within the contexts of both traditional and constructivist education.

The constructivist approach lacks cultural background knowledge, a condition that makes students ignore information surrounding societal norms. Moreover, this method limits a teacher’s ability to maximize their time on task and interaction with learners. This can prevent an accurate and relevant information base, particularly if a class is composed of many learners, hindering the realization of academic success and motivation. Regarding the importance of the constructivist approach, I disagree with the standpoint because learning situations vary and therefore must be approached differently. Teaching encompasses the application of the appropriate method concerning situation analysis. It calls for the consideration of available tools, the nature of the content, type of students, financial resources, learning environment, constraints, and the ability to pay for all these components.

Hence, using only the constructivist method may negatively impact the acquisition of critical thinking skills. Regarding the problems resulting from the application of the constructivist approach, I agree that learning should incorporate both traditional and constructivist methods to promote cultural background knowledge. The mixed method helps expose internal motivation and demonstrates self-discipline, such as the inclusion of a more academically conservative approach.
