How it works

Social media is a whole bunch of websites where many people seem to have an addiction for; whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter etc. Many people can’t seem to go a minute or not even a day without posting a picture for likes. They post their personal thoughts or even use it to vent. Why not call up a friend and have a real conversation with them about your problem? Kids these days don’t know what fun is.

They rather stay in the house locked up in their room browsing through social media all day. They isolate themselves from the outside world causing them to feel lonely and depressed. According to the article “Have smartphones destroyed a generation?” it brings up many key facts on why smartphones cause depression. ” The more time teens spend looking at screens, the more likely they are to report symptoms of depressions”. “Teens who spend three hours a day or more on electronic devices are 35 percent more likely to have risk factors for suicide, such as making a suicide plan.” Growing up I never had a Smartphone until I was sixteen years old.

I never knew what social media was until I was about twenty years old. When I was introduced to Facebook and Instagram I never focused much on social media; I would rather go hang out with my friends. We would go bowling, skating, to the movies, partying or just even to take a stroll on forty-second street in Manhattan. That’s what fun was all about. We never had Smartphone to look at every minute to take pictures and post for likes. Nowadays so many kids as young as seven years old have a Smartphone. They don’t know what it’s like to be around other kids and to have fun. How about going to the park? Play basketball, soccer, handball something to keep you active and build up your confidence.

All they know of is to sign on to their facebook Page to see how many people have liked their photos. Social media is a place where kids can develop depression and anxiety. It takes the fun out of many people and separates them from the real world causing them to feel alone and depressed. Imagine going on your facebook page and When one doesn’t see as many likes one tends to get curious and anxious about why no one hasn’t pushed that like button. They feel like no one cares about how they look or about oneself. They start to feel gloomy, secluded, and angry. Spending most of their time alone in their room is where most kids want to be but that’s not too healthy for oneself. I disliked being in the house. I loved being outside smelling the fresh air with the wind blowing through my hair walking down Gipson Street chitchatting and laughing with my friends.

Also, a lot of girls I know always seem to compare themselves with other girls on social media. Sometimes what you see online is not what it may be in real life. A lot of people photoshop their photos; use filters to make one self-look like the perfect person whatever that may be. The other girl may have something that they want whether it’s a big butt, boobs, small waste etc. It can cause them to feel less of themselves causing them to feel depressed and hoping to have that perfect body.
