How it works

In America there has been Genocide. Even abroad there has been genocide. Genocide is classified as the “deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group”. Genocide is intentional killing of people based on their race, gender, and many other entities. Many classify the biggest genocide in history was the killing of Germans during the Holocaust. Also, the intentional killing of Black Americans, during the slave trade and slavery. Even today with the intentional oppression of Black Americans from mass incarceration, police brutality, and other acts used to keep Black people oppressed.

There is an international organization that studies that acts against humanity. It is called The United Nations. The United Nations is responsible for maintain international peace, protecting human rights, delivering humanitarian aid, promote sustainable development, and upholding international law. The United Nations is responsible for ensuring that human rights are not being infringed on. Anytime where genocide or a group of people are being taken advantage of it is important that the United Nations intervene to dismantle the matter.

Many examples of genocide are the enslavement and murder of Jews during the Holocaust, the treatment, murder, and oppression of black people and also the Genocide of people in Rwanda. Genocide has been going on for years and many do not even classify it as such. Many times, the victims or descendants of genocide receive reparations are many other government subsidies to make up for the crimes against humanities.

Genocide also has may implications. Those implications consist of that there is a government or inviduals who has the power and authority to oppress and control people. Also, the power to kill of a group of people for no reason. No one should ever have the power to do so. Babies and newborns also are being killed when these types of matters happen.  Some war-torn countries and others have to fend for themselves when genocide is occurring, because the United Nations refuses to classify it as such. For example, the event that occurred in Dafur. It is known as the “Dafur Genocide that took place in Western Sudan. The genocide was the mass slaughter, rape, and killing of men, women, and babies. The killings have begun in 2003 by a group government armed and funded Arab militia called Janjaweed. The effects of this genocide are the killing of 480,00 people and over 2.8 billion people has been replaced. Sudan is the largest country in Africa. Many people are dead and missing because of the deliberate killing and rape of the people.

There has been a long and prolonged civil war in the Sudan. During, this war time babies, women, and men began to be killed and raped. With the first and second civil war over 1-2 million individuals were killed. Failed peace talks in regard to the atrocities has allowed it to continue to occur.

In 2008 According to the United Nations, the “UN issued a hybrid United Nations-African Union mission (UNAMID) to maintain peace in Darfur. UNAMID, with a projected strength of 26,000 troops, was authorized to use force to protect civilians. Despite this mandate, however, only 9,000 were sent, and they lacked the necessary equipment to carry out their mission”. Also, “On March 4, 2009, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Bashir for crimes against humanity and, in July 2010, a warrant for arrest on charges of genocide. The government of Sudan, however, has yet to turn him over, and since the issuance of the warrants, the country has seen major protests and increased violence”. The government has also forcefully expelled aid agencies from the country that has further jeopardized the conditions for thousands of displaced and marginalized civilians. With the suspension of government agencies, the countries and citizens has constantly been running the country on their own and it has only gotten worse as it was.

After studying the ongoing conflict, the United States response was, “The on-going conflict in Darfur, Sudan was declared “genocide” by United States Secretary of State Colin Powell on September 9, 2004, in testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. On February 18, 2006, President George W. Bush called for the number of international troops in Darfur to be doubled. It took a while for the United States to even classify the deliberate killings as genocide. Many countries who have a relationship with Sudanese government took measures to stop the United States act of deploying troops. Many countries such as Russia believed that Sudan should act on their own and make their own decisions in regard to what they feel is best for the country and not let the United States impose their imperialism in disguise as good will and democracy on Dafur. Even till this day there is still problems occurring in Dafur, Sudan. , many individuals are still being raped, killed, and bombing,

When it comes to problems that occur in a black country are not spoken about or shown on the news. Majority of these unlawful acts against humanity were still occurring till today. It is also important the people sitting on the board for the United Nations need to make integral changes that will be of assistance to the victims of this country.

Genocide is a side of this country no should admit and no one should have to experience. By studying the world, we live in today, we can learn how each and every country affects the world which allows change in the future generation. Because genocide has decreased in some countries over the years it still remains as a problem throughout southern countries in Africa and around the world as well.
