How it works

In the first book of the Hunger Games Trilogy, it follows Katniss Everdeen who is a sixteen year old girl from District 12 in the country of Panem, a futuristic post-apocalyptic world that is in most of where the United States and Canada used to be (ordinary world). Seventy four years before the events of the Hunger Games, Panem rebelled against the Capitol, but the Capitol put a stop to it. The thirteen district was destroyed leaving only twelve districts. In response, the Capitol decided to establish the Hunger Games which is an event that happens every year that has twenty-four children between the ages of twelve and eighteen participate.

There is one boy and one girl picked in every district as tribute. In the arena, they fight against each other to the death, until one remains standing. Katniss is from District 12 which is known for their coal mining, and is also one of the poorest districts. She grew up with her mother, sister, and father. Her father was killed from a mine explosion when she was only eleven years old. Katniss, grew up quickly after that. She would go out and hunt in the woods for food, and to trade for other things that her family needed. This would later help Katniss in the arena. We see Katniss go through the hero’s journey throughout the book.

At the beginning of the first book, we see the people of district twelve attend the ceremony where the two tributes are picked. Primrose, Katniss’ younger sister, is picked. Katniss decides to volunteer in her place (the call to adventure) being the new girl tribute to fight in the arena. If Primrose would have never gotten picked, Katniss probably would not have volunteered (refusal of the call) since there would be no reason for Katniss to do so. Plus, it wasn’t common for people in district twelve to volunteer for one another like it was in other districts. After saying goodbye to their family and friends, Katniss and Peeta head to the capitol where the games are held every year. On the train, they meet their mentor, Haymitch (meeting the mentor). Haymitch participated in the 50th Hunger Games and won. For the next twenty-three years he trained tributes until Katniss and Peeta came along.

Katniss later meets Cinna, who was her stylist during the hunger games. He is also seen as a mentor to Katniss, and isn’t like the other people from the capitol which Katniss likes. Out of all the people that she met through the hunger games, Katniss is probably closest to Cinna from the start. Effie, who is the escort of the district 12 tributes, she later becomes a mentor to Katniss and a close friend. She later also becomes advisor to Katniss later in the books. So, even though Haymitch is the main mentor, and the only one with the name, Katniss also has many other mentors through the games mainly Cinna and Effie. When Katniss gets to the capitol, she spends the next few weeks in the penthouse with Peeta, Haymitch, and Effie. In this period of time, her and Peeta train with the other tributes for the games (crossing the first threshold/belly of the whale). The Capitol is different than what they are normally used to. The Capitol is a technologically advanced city where most of the nation’s wealth and power is. The most powerful citizens also live in the capitol. The people in the capitol where colorful and crazy clothes and makeup while the people in district 12 usually wear plain and simple clothing with little to no makeup.

After training, they are eventually sent in the hunger games arena to compete (belly of the whale). The arena is a woody area with a lake and mountains, a place that Katniss is used to. At first, she is alone, and has to find ways to survive without telling anyone where her location is. Katniss eventually allies with Rue. (Road of Trials). Throughout the games, people that are watching the games, are able to send stuff to the tributes they want that will help them. For example, Haymitch sends Katniss some medicine that she needs for her burn on her leg. Later, the capitol puts something for each of the remaining districts that they need. (the meeting with the goddess). The arena also has a cornucopia which contains weapons, food, and so on. Katniss later blows up the cornucopia for a reason, and Rue later dies shortly after this. This affects Katniss deeply since Rue was like a sister to her. This event strays Katniss from the compete for some time before she has to leave Rue behind to finish the games even though she does not want to (the woman as temptress). Later, Katniss finds Peeta, and they later become allies. To gain help from the outside world, Katniss pretends to love Peeta, and they become star crossed lovers (the woman as temptress).

Eventually, there are only three people left; Katniss, Peeta, and another tribute. Peeta and Katniss must fight off a pack of wolves along with the last victor. The other victor is killed which leaves Peeta and Katniss. They both think they win due to the rule change earlier that the head gamemaker stated that allows tributes from the same district to win as a team, but after the other victor is dead and the wolves are gone, the rule is change back to there can only be one tribute left standing. Instead of killing each other, Peeta and Katniss plan to eat berries that will kill them, but before they could eat the berries, the head gamemaker stops them, and declares them the victors of the hunger games (atonement with the father/abyss). Haymitch later warns her of the danger, and that it is far from over after the hunger games. The authorities are furious at being made fools of. So, as they head to the victor interview after the games, Haymitch advises her to still pretend that her actions were because she loved Peeta not for any other reason (apotheosis).

This is the moment when she realizes the effect of her actions, and later, she will learn that her actions have a chain reaction in the second and third books (the ultimate boon). Katniss wants to go home, but she will go home a different person. She wants to forget what had happened in the arena. She will now have to face her new reality. Katniss will now live in the victor village where Peeta and Haymitch also live. Her mother and sister will also live with her. But being there will be different now, and it won’t be easy. (refusal of the return).

Heading to the games, Katniss had to face competing in the arena, but coming back, we see six months later in the second book, Katniss learns that her defiance has started a chain reaction. The other districts are starting rebellions after they saw what Katniss and Peeta had done in the games (the magic flight). Katniss is uncertain on what is going to happen next. She is currently walking on eggshells around the capitol. In the second book, Katniss’ family and friends bring her back to everyday life, but now, being a victor, her life will change. Plus, she also has to keep up being in love with Peeta, who she now has feelings for, and genuinely likes him. (rescue from without).

Katniss then shares what it was like in the arena with her friends and family, and doesn’t want it to ever happen again which I totally understand. The hunger games is brutal, and no one should have to go through that (crossing of the return threshold). Now, Katniss will live between two worlds. Katniss now gets to live the life of luxury in the victor’s village, but she is also still a part of one of the poorest districts. Katniss still hunts in the woods to get food, and she also still trades for things, but now she gets to live in a nice, big house (master of two worlds). For now, she gets to live her life in the district not having to fight for her life, but still has to worry about it (freedom to live). They could have killed her in the arena by letting her and Peeta eat the berries. They also could have killed her after the games but they didn’t. For now, they will let her live, but Peeta and Katniss will have to convince the country that they love each other and that was the reason they defied the capitol to stay alive.

We see that besides the refusal of the call and the refusal to go home, that Katniss’ story fits the monomyth in every other stage. Overall, we see that Katniss is a hero in her own right even though she is not the typical hero that we think about when we hear the word ‘hero’. We saw throughout the book, that Katniss not only fought for her life, but she also fought for the lives of others. For example, pretending to be in love with Peeta so that way both of them could get out of the arena. Another example is Katniss and her family. From a young age, she was providing for the family, and protecting them which carried into the arena. In the arena, she not only wanted to live for her own reasons, but she also wanted to live to head back to her family. There are a lot more examples throughout the book, but you would have to read it to see it. Katniss is not only a hero in my book, but she is also a hero in monomyth’s book.
