When George was 16 he went to work as a surveyor where he took measurements of new lands, mapping them out in detail.

Around the age of 19 he became a leader with the Virginia militia and became involved in the start of the French and Indian War. After the war George settled down and married Martha Dandridge Custis. When his brother Died George took over the estate of Mount Vernon where he raised Martha’s two children from a former marriage. George and Martha never had any children of their own.

When the American Revolutionary War broke out in 1775, Congress created the Continental Army and George Washington was appointed as its commander-in-chief. Washington was in charge of several important duties during the war. He planned the entire strategy of the war with the support of congress. He organized and trained the army and kept their morale strong. George’s political and personal skill was instrumental to make the congress, the Army the French and the states work towards a common goal. He led the U.S. to victory against the British forces in 1775-1777 and then again in 1781. He may have lost battles, but he never surrendered his army. He defeated the British army commanded by Lord Cornwallis at the battle of Yorktown, which was the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War and forced the British government to negotiate an end to the conflict. He was known as a hero because of this.

After the American Revolutionary war George Washington served two terms as the first U.S. president he served from 1789 to 1797. Some of his roles and traditions are still in use today. He formed the first presidential cabinet which included his friends Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. Just a few years in 1799 after leaving the office he caught a bad cold and throat infection, the doctors those days did not know how to treat an illness some think that the treatments may have caused his death. George Washington later died from pneumonia like his father at 67 years old. He died in his home in Mount Vernon Va.
