Drama and Comedy in “Do the Right Thing”

“”Do The Right Thing,”” set in 1989, is set to be one of the hottest summer days in Brooklyn, with controversy at a closed pizza shop with tensions and ethnic tragedy. Losing its influence: grief, ethnic tension and police continue to be the subject of concern – in New York City and elsewhere.. The story is telling about the conflicts between black community and two business store of Italian American and Korean American. The actors and actress are successfully plays their roles to show the audiences the negative and dark effects of racism.

Mookie (Spike Lee) is a 25-year-old delivery man living in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn with his sister, Jade (Joie Lee). He and his girlfriend, Tina (Rosie Perez), have sons. He worked at a local bakery, but lacked ambition. Sal (Danny Aiello), the owner of the pizza restaurant, has been in the neighborhood for 25 years. His eldest son, Pino (John Turturro), is extremely fond of black people and does not get along with Mookie. Pino is in conflict with his brother Vito (Richard Edson), who is friendly with Mookie. The neighborhood has a variety of characters, including Da Mayor (Ossie Davis), a local drunk; Sister (Ruby Dee), who is watching the neighborhood from the brown stone; Smiley (Roger Guenveur Smith), a mentally retarded man. The film clearly depicts the life of the people of color in the society that discriminated heavily at that time.

The main character is Mooky, a young black man who has a wife and a son. He works at Sal’ famous pizza restaurant which is belong to an Italian family. The fight started from the disagree of one of young black man and Raheem- radio man about Sal’s pizza store. In the movie, mise-en-scene such as setting, actors, customs, light, which of them plays a prominent role to show the character’s emotion as well as the mostiphere of the neighborhood. Camera movement and setting are also important to describe and show the character’s action.

Do the right thing describes completely the negetive power of fighting of the racism through prominent mise-en-scene. Actors with thier personality, customs which describes the charater’s personality and the role they plays in the movie. For example, the old-drunk black man wearing the dirty suit which showing he he is poor and nasty, Mooky’s sister with her big hat and dress shows that she is a nice person with soft attitudes, Raheem is a radio man with hip-hop customs and carrying his radio all the time with emphasize his extravagant and noisy, which is cause the serious fight later in the movie. Sal family wearing shirt with gold chainof Sal’s son which describe the Italian’s fashion style.

Raheem’s radio jewelry depicts the main role in the mise-en-scene scene. The “”love”” and “”hate”” bronze couplings on each table explain in a spectacle, symbolizing the struggle between two forces in the neighborhood. When Radio Raheem punches the camera head, it underscores his anger at racism and wishes it to be removed from the picture. Another example of mise-en-scene is the white man’s outfit running on Jordan’s Buggin’Out. In that scene, a white man wearing a Celtic shirt by Larry Byrd. Byrd is a white football star in the Celtics basketball team. Buggin Out wears Michael Jordan’s athletic shoes. When Michael Jordan was also a basketball star in the NBA, the only difference was that Michael Jordan was African American. This example is not a coincidence. Costumes are used intentionally to emphasize racial differences in the film and character depictions of the character. These are just a few examples of footage that Spike Lee uses in the movie Do the Right Thing.

During the day, heat and tension begin to rise. Local teens open fire hoses and street douse, before police intervene. Mookie and Pino started racial controversy. Mookie confronted Pino about his negative attitude toward African Americans, although his favorite celebrity was. The various characters then cast racial insults into the camera: Mookie against the Italians, Pino against the African-American, Latino Stevie (Luis Antonio Ramos) against the Koreans, police White Long (Rick Aiello) against Puerto Ricans and Korean shop owner Sonny Park) against the Jews. Pino and Sal talked about the neighborhood, with Pino expressing contempt for African Americans, and Sal insisted he would not leave. Steamed by fire Mookie, but Jade intervenes, before Mookie confronts her for being too close to Sal.

The fight cause because of Raheem come to Sal store ask him why he did not sorry to him for his rude act. Sal broke his radio, so Raheem fought with Sal. Then Police came and kiiled Raheem, but the Radio Raheem’s death was blamed to Sal and his sons. Mookie took a trash can and throwed it through the window of the Sal bakery, causing the crowd to rush into the restaurant and destroy it, and Smiley finally burns it, symploylizing for a negative act of racism. While Sal family could not do anything to protect their store. Firefighters and riot patrols came to put out the fire and disperse the crowd. After the police issued a warning, firefighters turned their tubes on rioters, leading to many wars and arrests. Mookie and Jade sit on the sidewalk, staring at the sky. Smiley wanders back to the frozen building and hangs one of his photographs of what remains of Sal’s wall.

The whole movie show a very dark and negative effects of racism. The mise-en scene of this movie describes the how actors wear and the way of camera movement also show the audience actors’s actions and asmostphere of the community.
