How it works

The respiratory system is a system that is responsible for a few things. The respiratory system is responsible for the swallowing, speech, and most importantly the breathing. The body must inhale the oxygen and exhale the carbon dioxide. The respiratory system has the responsibility of getting the oxygen to the blood. The oxygen must enter the body so the blood can circulate throughout the entire body. The nose, mouth, pharynx, trachea, larynx, lungs, and bronchi are all parts of the respiratory system.

Breathing is one of the main responsibilities of the respiratory system. The breathing is controlled in the medulla. The oxygen we breathe in enters the nose or the mouth (Zimmermann, 2018). Oxygen passes the sinuses after it enters the nose or the mouth. Sinuses help control the temperature and humidity of the air we breathe in (Zimmerman, 2018). A pathway is provided for the oxygen to come from the air in to the lungs (Wolgin, Smith, & French, 2012). It is important to leave this pathway open. The oxygen travels down the windpipe into the bronchi then to the lungs (Zimmermann, 2018). The blood from the heart is sent to the lungs to be oxygenated. Oxygenated means to have a good supply of blood. The blood is sent back to the heart to be circulated throughout the body. Carbon dioxide leaves the body by exhaling.

The trachea and bronchi are kept open by incomplete cartilage rings (Wolgin, Smith, & French, 2012). The larynx is located on top of the trachea. The larynx contains the vocal cords that makes it possible for us to speak (Wolgin, Smith, & French, 2012). The epiglottis covers the opening to the trachea. This keeps the food from entering the lungs instead of the stomach. If the food enters the lungs instead of the stomach, this is called aspiration. Aging can affect the respiratory system in many ways. Some of these things include loss of elasticity, loss of tone, increased mucus production, etc. (Wolgin, Smith, & French 2012).

Hypoxia and anoxia is included in this also. Hypoxia is a decrease in oxygen and anoxia is a complete lack of oxygen (Zimmermann, 2018). A pulse oximeter is used to measure the oxygen level in a patient’s blood (Wolgin, Smith, & French, 2012). There are so many diseases and disorders associated with the respiratory system. Sinusitis, Pharyngitis, Bronchitis, Tuberculosis, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease are some of the disorders. Sinusitis is the inflammation of the sinuses, Pharyngitis is the inflammation of the throat, and Bronchitis is the inflammation of the bronchi (Wolgin, smith, & French, 2012). Tuberculosis can be easily transmitted from one person to another through the air, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is caused by repeated infections (Wolgin, Smith, & French, 2012).

Asthma, pneumonia, and lung cancer are some of the most common disease in the respiratory system also. Pneumonia is the inflammation of the lung. Asthma is the inflammation of the lung airways (Zimmermann, 2018). Lung cancer is the growth of cancer in the lungs and it can affect smokers and non-smokers (Zimmermann 2018). These different types of diseases and disorders have their own treatment. There are several types of organs that are associated with the respiratory system. These organs are nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, bronchi, trachea, and the lungs. There are many diseases and disorders associated with this system. These disease and disorders are sinusitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, pneumonia, and lung cancer. The respiratory system has a few responsibilities. Two of these things are speaking and swallowing. The main responsibility is breathing, the inhaling of oxygen and the exhaling of carbon dioxide.
