Birth Control Coverage a Woman’s Demanded Right

A huge part of being a woman is motherhood. It is a very precious concept that should be considered whenever a woman is capable of caring for a child emotionally, physically, and financially. However, sometimes accidents happen. Birth control is one of the most efficient and responsible solutions to avoid unwanted pregnancy especially in teens. In today’s society, there has been an increase of birth control usage in the United States. Mostly all women of age to conceive who have had sexual intercourse have taken a contraceptive approach.

Birth control can ensure that women have a choice of what happens to their bodies while treating and preventing other serious illnesses. Using birth control has proven to reduce teen pregnancy; while also having other health benefits such as controlling diseases, preventing ovarian cancers, uterus infections, and preventing cysts in the breasts.

The President of The United States, Donald Trump, and the U.S. government are trying to strip birth control coverage from hundreds to thousands of women in our country. Birth control is a must for women.. Birth control is saving lives literally and figuratively. Without the affordable access to contraception, women with serious illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and high blood pressure will suffer the most. The United States’s potential future policy on birth control must be challenged because without the coverage of birth control, women are susceptible to cancer, unable to manage medical conditions, and having unplanned pregnancies leading to a high chance of experiencing premature delivery.

The coverage of birth control benefits society as a whole. Contraception lessens the chances of poverty, serious illness, and the amount of children that go into the foster care system. Poverty rates will rise if Donald Trump repeals The Affordable Care Act. Women work the same long, exhausting hours as men do to have an affordable lifestyle. Some are lawyers, doctors, teachers, and government officials. By preventing coverage of contraceptives, women are at risk of not being able to provide for a child financially. They simply do not have the means to raise a child living paycheck to paycheck. For some women, if they experience unplanned pregnancy, providing food and shelter is nearly impossible for them. Children would go nights without having a sufficient amount of food to eat and a safe place to call home. A lot of women also have serious illnesses of their own such as diabetes, congenital heart disease, cancer, and high blood pressure. According to the Adult Congenital, “The risk of pregnancy with women with CHD…carries a prohibitive risk of death for the woman and/or the baby. For these women, birth control is more than just a method to conveniently space babies.” Unplanned pregnancy especially in teens often leads to child being entered into the foster-care system. Many women can’t provide, therefore; children get placed in to foster care if they are not brought by a family at an adoption agency. According to adoption statistics, “there are 107,918 foster children eligible and waiting for adoption.”

Diabetic women are susceptible to diabetic flare ups if not being able to access the proper birth control. These contraceptives include the plan, the daily pills, and the patches. Diabetic women suffer can use birth control to treat their acne and excessive hair growth due to high testosterone levels. According to diabetes.co.uk, “Injections and implants are considered safe for diabetics to use.” The widely known option for diabetic women are pills that contain both estrogen and progestin. It has been determined that certain contraceptives can lead to changes in blood glucose levels. However, these combination contraceptives show rare circumstances of that happening and the body is able to control sugar levels. The American Diabetes Association states, “birth control methods, such as a diaphragm, will not affect blood glucose at all.” Due to limitability of contraceptives, diabetics could have to spend more out of pocket than the average women for their medication. IUD cost $100 out of pocket without coverage and most women can’t afford that monthly. Without the ACA, they are not able to prevent unplanned pregnancy. They are at higher risk of their child having birth defects due to high blood sugar levels. The Affordable Care Act can ensure for these women are protected not only by unplanned pregnancy, but having to deal with the emotional distress of their child having birth defects or miscarriages. Removing coverage of these women could increase chances of maternal deaths in our country.

There are plenty of health benefits to birth control. One being the prevention of endometriosis, which is the tissue lining the uterus may grow into the fallopian tubes or ovaries, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PSOC) where a woman’s eggs may not fully developed or be released as needed. Dr. Sabra Klein states “If women are taking estrogen-like hormones for other reasons, an added benefit might be less susceptibility to influenza during flu season.” All of these illness and non-illnesses are proper examples that birth control is used by many not just those who are sexually active.

President Donald Trump is fighting to take away contraception coverage from 55 million women in the United States. Prevention of diseases, teen pregnancy, miscarriages, cancers, and important non contraceptive effect don’t seem to matter much to Donald Trump. According to NY Times, “By spring 2014, two-thirds of women using birth control pills and nearly 75 percent of women using the contraceptive ring were no longer paying out-of-pockets. The National Women’s Law Center stated “In 2013 alone, the mandate had saved women $1.4 billion on birth control. Majority of women in our country want the birth control coverage to continue. Women have the ability to have long lasting, effective contraceptives such as the IUD with the birth control benefit. Without the use of birth control, the population is bound to increase leading to overpopulation which would result in less food supply, jobs, and homes for society as a whole. Most women can’t afford contraceptives without the ACA. Women making the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour would have to work around 50-55 hours a week just for birth control alone. Making it impossible for them to be able to pay their bills and survive. Trump’s birth control repeal could end up costing women $1.4 billion a year in copays. Regardless of your religious preference, economic standing, it would be ridiculous to agree that women should not have accessed to birth control simply because they cannot afford it. It is simply inhumane.
