Animals in Zoos

Animals shouldn’t be kept in the zoo. Tigers and lions have around 18,000 times less space in zoos than they would in the wild. ” 75% of elephants were overweight and only 16% could walk normally, the remainder having various degrees of lameness. Lions in zoos spend 48% of their time pacing, a recognized sign of behavioral problems. Zoos spend millions on keeping animals confined, while natural habitats are destroyed and animals killed as there is insufficient funding for protection. A Freedom for Animals study of UK aquariums found that 41% of the animals on display had no signs identifying their species, the most basic of information.

It is wrong for animals to stay in zoo’s. Tigers get let in cages most of the time and kept in captive. These animals are captured from their natural habitat. They are taking from their families and live in inhumane conditions. How does the ESA make a law that you can’t keep wild animals as pets but doesn’t refer that to zoos? In the zoo these animals live in harsh conditions and chimpanzees are always “”trained”” until their 8 years old because they can’t get beat because after that age they become too big to control. Some lions are declawed when they get to the zoo, claws amputated until the last joint so the claws don’t come back. Wild Dolphins swim up to 40 miles a day but when they are captive they are forced to swim in tiny pools.

Often, zoos cannot provide enough space for animals to live a happy life. Scientists say that breeding may not be as effective as animals in the wild. Animals live a less pleasant life inside the zoo rather than being outside.3,000 to 5,000 healthy animals are killed every year in the zoo. Space is at least 18,000 times less than what it would be in the wild. Zoo animals live a span of 17 years at least being in the zoo while in the wild they may live up to 50-60 years.

Even in the best zoos animals aren’t always able to do what they want. Most animals are prohibited from doing what they do the most like running or flying a long distance. Animals are usually bored or deprived locked in a room all day long and only eating and sleeping in there as well.
