Affirmative action policies are necessary in order to compensate for centuries of racial, social, and economic oppression. Generally, individuals with higher socioeconomic status have more opportunities than those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Supporters believe that certain racial or ethnic groups are disadvantaged because they are frequently in lower income brackets and consequently are not exposed to the same resources as students from higher socioeconomic classes. Advocates support the notion of competition between students based on merit, but argue that affirmative action compensates for economic disparities ( American Civil Liberties Union)

Body

Main Point- The use of Affirmative Action is used to diversify jobs and universities.

Affirmative action programs have resulted in doubling or tripling the number of minority applications to colleges or universities, and have made colleges and universities more representative of their surrounding community. Statistics show that after California abolished its affirmative action programs in 1998, the minority student admissions at UC Berkeley fell 61 percent, and minority admissions at UCLA fell 36 percent. After Texas abolished its affirmative action program in 1996, Rice University’s freshman class had 46 percent fewer African-Americans and 22 percent fewer Hispanic students. (National  Conference of State Legislatures)

It can generate unfavorable results for businesses and schools- Many people hired because of Affirmative Action are not qualified for the position.  Makes schools lower their minimal requirements to fit the quota.

Graduates who benefited from affirmative action programs say that they have received better jobs, earned more money, and ultimately are living better lives because of the opportunity they received. (ACLU )

The workforce is becoming more diverse and this allows for their to be an early taste of the diversity of the workforce. College is the place to manke long lasting connections and Affirmative actions allows for this.

Main Point- Reverse Racism equals discrimination against whites – racism is a system in which a dominant race benefits off the oppression of others

Affirmative Action allows for those at a disadvantage are able to have equal opportunities

The oppressed cannot oppress the oppressor

They believe that because they are overlooked by academically unqualified students.

Affirmative Action amplify racial prejudice. They believe this because they say skin color and intelligence have no correlation which can be seen as condescending to the minority.

Visual Aid discussion- This aid shows why affirmative action is still needed. If affirmative action ways not created the gap would be even bigger especially with the effect of college education. This shows the disparities even though Affirmative has been growing.

Conclusion

Transition- Now I will like to remind you of my main point. In this speech I first talked about the benefits of Affirmative Action Secondly I talked about the opposers of Affirmative Action and their main points

Review of Main Points- Main points are the benefits of Affirmative Action. Second main point is critics views and why they are wrong.

Concluding Statement- My professor Ms.Roberts told me when it come to fixing racism you either can have equal opportunity or the ideal result Which one would you choose?

History – Affirmative action is an outcome of the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement, intended to provide equal opportunities for members of minority groups and women in education and employment. In 1961, President Kennedy was the first to use the term “affirmative action” in an Executive Order that directed government contractors to take “affirmative action to ensure that applicants are employed, and that employees are treated during employment, without regard to their race, creed, color, or national origin.”
