Abortion and its Issues

Abortion. Topic that is at the mouth of fierce politicians with thousands of followers and no actual knowledge of the subject and our beloved grandmas playing bingo on a Sunday afternoon. Not that many themes carry so much angry arguments, discussions or huge Facebook posts, which, devoid of facts, can lead to nowhere. And here are the facts: Abortion is a deliberate interruption of a human pregnancy most often performed during the first 28 weeks. This interruption is sought by people all around the world and here is why we should not abort it.

Viruses. The scientific community has a hard time trying to define if a virus is a living being or not. Why? According to the online Merriam-Webster dictionary life is “an organismic state characterized by capacity for metabolism, growth, reaction to stimuli and reproduction”. The party that supports that viruses are not living beings, upholds it because they can’t grow or reproduce without a living cell from another organism. Using the same analogy, an embryo or a fetus (the name changes after the 8th week of pregnancy) could not be considered a living being, because it can’t grow or reproduce outside its carrier (the fetus may survive after the 23rd week with intensive care). Deconstructing, this way, one of the biggest arguments of pro life supporters, that says that abortion is murder, as you cannot kill what it’s not alive.

Women. Not once in history the female gender has had as much power over their lives as they have in the 21st century. They can vote, they can work, and they can put everything in their lives a order of priority and decide when it is the best time to accomplish them. One of the things women may have on their list or not, is having a baby, and that is only possible to choose if you have the possibility of abortion, because there is no contraceptive method that is 100% effective. The most common ones, such as condoms and the contraceptive pill, work 98% and 99% respectively. If used correctly, if not those numbers drop to 85% and 91%. With that said, abortion is a tool that empowers women and, unlike contraceptive methods, give them the possibility to truly plan their lives.

Stem cells. A stem cell is an undifferentiated cell of a multicellular organism that is capable of giving rise to indefinitely cells of the same type, and from which certain other cells arise by differentiation. In other words, a stem cell is a cell that can become, by differentiation, any other cell such as blood, skin, muscle, nerve, liver or any other kind of cell. That means that stem cells can treat or cure diseases by replacing the damaged tissue by disease, injury or aging. For example, stem cells can: replace neurons damaged by spinal cord injury, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson disease, produce insulin that could treat people with diabetes and heart muscles cells that could repair damage of a heart attack or replace virtually any tissue or organ that is injured or diseased. And where can we find those magical cells in abundance? Within an aborted embryo. Embryos are literally made of stem cells, which means that abortion could enhance the treatment of numerous diseases such as Alzheimer and Parkinson.

Therefore, abortion is a practice that should not be aborted. Because as explained, can help the community as a hole by being a way to empower women and enhance the treatment of diseases such as cirrhosis and diabetes or even generate a cure without killing anyone.
